Senate Committee Urges Immediate Measures on Electricity Production

ISLAMABAD, August 10 (Online Int’l): The Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources has recommended to WAPDA that all the facilities are available at Kohat dam and immediate measures should be taken regarding electricity production.

The Chairman Committee said that surprisingly the dam was built 53 years ago and no work has been done on it regarding electricity production. Yesterday a meeting was held regarding Water Resources chaired by the Chairman Senator Shamim Afridi, in which Usman Khan Kakar, Sana Jamali and Syed Sabir Shah participated and WAPDA, small dam authorities, Secretary Energy also participated.

On this occasion the committee was informed that the affectees refusing to take colony on Neelum Jhelum Dam took Rs 0.5 million per house and the total number of affectees there were 28. The committee was informed that citizens feel anxious due to Indian shelling at the area of Athmuqam and demands the construction of bunkers.

The Chairman said that I am a tribal and have a lot of family rivals, that’s why I know the life of bunkers. Usman Kakar said it is necessary to call the petitioner related to Warsak Dam.

On the other hand Azad Kashmir authorities informed the committee on Neelum Jhelum Project that affectees want those 28 houses to be given Rs 0.5 million per house instead of Rs 0.3 million, and earlier they refused for the colony and now they are demanding it again. The affectees asked for employment. Out of 7000 employees 1300 were Chinese and the rest of them was locals. The supply of local material was given to the local community and 213 employees were hired out of which 98 were from AJK and Neelum Jhelum locals will be hired from grade 1 to 4.

The Secretary Power said non-technical staff will be locals and technical staff will be hired on merit. The committee was informed that affectees are demanding to construct a wall to stop the sliding. Syed Sabir Shah said that they can’t refuse the demands of the affectees, on which the Chairman said that if it’s that much important the committee will decide after visiting the site.

DG Small Dam KP Atta-ur-Rehman informed that electricity can’t be produced in Kohat Division. 78,000 acres storage was in 1967 and now it has been filled. 1 to 1.5 feet mud fills in during a year. Sabir Shah said there is no such system that feasibility has been made to take out the mud or will just go 15 feet above. GM water informed that feasibility to produce electricity is being made on 10 kanals. Sabir Shah while expressing anger said don’t you know that the GM informed that work is in process on producing 5000 MW electricity for the natural streams in Dir, Chitral and Balakot?

Lawargar Goli Band included 5 dams that are irrigating a thousand acres of land. DG Small Dams informed that Zameer Gull, Khatak Band and Makh Band Dams are under construction and these will irrigate 7000 acres land. 6 dams were constructed by PSDP. Gandiali, Ganda Fatah, Kandhar Nayab Dam are constructed from which thousands of acres of land has been irrigated.
