In a surprising turn of events, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a prominent figure within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has resigned from his position as the party’s senior vice president. Abbasi has expressed his decision as a move to provide an “open field” for Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz. Despite stepping down from his role, Abbasi has affirmed his commitment to contributing to the country’s well-being through the platform of Reimagining Pakistan.

As reported by The News on February 01, 2023, Abbasi had previously stated approximately three years ago that it would be untenable for him to continue his association with Maryam Nawaz if she were to ascend to the party’s top office. Clarifying that the Reimagining Forum is not a political party, he called on critics to collaborate with the forum rather than creating confusion about its objectives. Abbasi emphasized the need for a calm analysis of the situation to address the complexities facing the nation, stating, “We are urging people to find a way out to deal with the challenges.”

Addressing the matter in an appearance on Samaa News, Abbasi confirmed that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the time of Maryam’s appointment. He expressed disappointment that the party did not officially announce the development as he had anticipated.

Maryam Nawaz, the presumptive heir to Nawaz Sharif, has been thrust into the political spotlight. Despite her considerable capabilities, she currently faces skepticism from some quarters within the party, possibly due to a divergence in political ideology. Notably, Hamza Sharif has reportedly been signaled to have no future role in the politics of PML-N.

While Maryam Nawaz demonstrated resilience during the challenging Panama case, a severe test for Nawaz Sharif, she has occasionally displayed anger towards those she holds responsible for her father’s predicament. Khaqan Abbasi’s resignation serves as an indication that there may be doubts within the party about Maryam’s ascent to the top, as not all members endorse her brand of politics.
