BaaghiTV: At least 39 migrants have been killed in a shipwreck off Tunisia, according to the Tunisian Defense Ministry. The incident took place as the refugees were trying to cross the Mediterranean to the Italian island of Lampedus. Coast Guard personnel rescued 165 others and are searching for more survivors off the coast of Suffolk, ministry spokesman Muhammad Zakari said. He added that all the migrants killed were from sub-Saharan Africa.

The port of Tunisia, has become a major departure center for those seeking a better life in Europe to escape war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. In 2019, nearly 90 African migrants drowned when their boat collided off the coast of Tunisia after heading to Europe from neighboring Libya, one of the worst disasters facing Tunisian authorities.

A human rights group says the number of Tunisian migrants on Italian shores has more than increased fivefold to 13,000 by 2020, adding to Tunisia’s economic woes.
