Sindh Assembly Passes Resolution Favoring the 26th Constitutional Amendment
The Sindh Assembly, on Wednesday, passed a resolution favoring the 26th Amendment of the 1973 Constitution through a majority vote.
On the occasion, Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah paid tribute to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for playing a vital role in the passing of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. Presenting the resolution, Shah remarked that the passing of the 1973 Constitution was a historic achievement of the PPP Founder, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto likewise, the passing of its 26th Amendment is an achievement for the PPP founder’s grandson, and current party Chairman, Bilawal B. Zardari.

Shah added that the motion will continue the legacy of the Charter of Democracy signed by Bilawal Bhutto’s mother, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and PML-N leader, Nawaz Sharif. On the other hand, criticizing the judicial practices of the past that had prioritized high-profile cases for mere media attention CM Sindh remarked: “The new amendment will enable litigants to receive timely justice”.
On the one hand, the leader of the opposition, Ali Khurshidi, welcomed the resolution calling it a positive step forward, on the other, he voiced his concerns against it. Khurshidi reminded the Assembly that the Charter of Democracy mandates the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee should be from the opposition, a practice that is followed in Balochistan but ignored in Sindh.

Likewise, Muhammad Farooq, the parliamentary leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Shabbir Qureshi of the Sunni Ittehad Council, and senior Information Minister Sharjeel Memon have criticized the amendment. Farooq has called it non-consensual alleging that the resolution has not been unanimously passed. He has further accused the government of selectively implementing the 18th Amendment and politicizing the appointment of the Chief Justice (CJ) of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi.
Similarly, Shabbir Qureshi has accused the government of distorting Bhutto’s constitution for ‘personal interests’, cautioning against actions that may be intolerable in the future. In correlation with the others, Memon has also criticized the judiciary of undermining democracy and alleged that judges have a history of dismissing elected prime ministers.
