The Modi government has registered a case against opposition Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and six journalists for allegedly torturing farmers during a tractor rally in Delhi. The arrests were made after a complaint was lodged by a resident at FIR Sector 20 police station in Noida, alleging that the men were responsible for the violence during the tractor rally due to a social media post.

Among the journalists named in the FIR are Mrinal Pande, Rajdeep Sardesai, Vinod Jose, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath and Anant Nath. A senior Noida police official said the case was registered under Section 124A (Rebellion), 295A of the Indian Penal Code for insulting religion or religious beliefs of any class and inciting religious sentiments, 504, 506 (criminal threat), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and others listed for reasons. Noida police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

Thousands of protesters clashed with police on January 26 during a tractor rally called by farmers’ organizations. Many of the protesters, driving tractors, reached the Red Fort and entered it. Some protesters waved the Khalistan flag on its domes, where the national flag of India is hoisted by the Prime Minister on Independence Day.
