Twitter Tip-jar

San Francisco, May 7 2021: Senior product manager at Twitter, Esther Crawford informed the public about a new feature Twitter is adding to its service whereby some user accounts will soon be able to add a tip-jar feature to its posts.

The tool will allow readers of the post to donate money to the post and will allow profile people to receive and show support for causes by using money. The icon will route the reader to a services such as Patreon, PayPal or Venmo so they can send money to the creator of a post they wish to support. Twitter will not be taking any cut on the amount of tips.  The role of the virtual tip jar is to allow groups such as content creators, journalists, experts and NGOs to better drive the conversation about things that matter by going beyond followers, re-tweets and Likes, according to Crawford.

The feature will initially only be available to some limited number of accounts in English but soon more people will be able to access it for their posts and it will get expanded to include more languages. The one to many business model of the social media messaging app has its advantages, such as being an important forum for policy debates, but in recent times, Twitter has struggled to expand beyond the core market of celebrities, journalists and political figures and this is an attempt to broaden its ranks and get users to spend time on the platform.

The financial results for Twitter in the last year show weaker than expected earnings and user base growth. In the past, the social media service had also faced challenges in terms of how they tackle the spread of misinformation and abusive and socially unacceptable content in its attempt to become a platform for global political discourse.
