According to reports of Baaghi TV, Swiss politicians have demanded an investigation into the matter that a Swiss encryption company has been used to allegedly spy on international governments by the CIA and its counterpart in Germany.

Co-Head of Switzerland’s Socialist Party, Cedric Wermuth, in an interview with the SRF [Swiss public broadcaster] questioned how such an incident is possible. Wermuth argued, “How can such a thing happen in a country that claims to be neutral like Switzerland?”

According to reports of Baaghi TV, Wermuth called for a parliamentary inquiry following the broadcast which revealed that a Swiss company, Omnisec, is involved in an “espionage scheme” being spearheaded by German and the US authorities.

Prior to this, another Swiss company Crypto, was involved in similar operations nearly a decade ago that included a detailed set-up by by the CIA and the then West Germany’s Federal Intelligence agency BND, to dig-up information on top government officials.

According to reports, SRF‘s programme reveled that like Crypto, which had split from its Swiss equipment manufacturer back in 1987, and sold its encryption equipment such as voice and fax data to international governments; Omnisec had also taken up similar  pursuits.

Reportedly, Crypto had halted its operations nearly two years ago, however, the work of selling equipment, understandably “manipulated”, to governments has begun anew via Omnisec.

Based on SRF‘s investigative report, Omnisec has so far sold its OC-500 devices to multiple federal agencies in Switzerland including the Swiss intelligence agencies and UBS, believed to be the largest Swiss bank.

Apart from Cedric Wermuth, Parliamentarian Hans-Peter Portman has also argued that such a move is bound to affect businesses. Portman stated, “This raises the question of espionage even within the country”.

Moreover, leader of Switzerland’s Socialist Party Wermuth added that the problem seems broader than the involvement of one or two companies. Wermuth stated, “We still have no answers on the political responsibility aspect”.

The investigation highlighted that while the Crypto case had come to a close earlier this month, it had benefited Switzerland’s intelligence agencies due to information gathered by foreign counterparts through Crypto. Moreover, according to reports of SRF, The Washington Post and ZDF, the Swiss encryption company, Crypto had operated as a Trojan horse to spy on the government agencies across the world.

It is believed that they supplied “encoded communications” to almost 120 countries including Iran, India, Pakistan and South American governments, respectively. This information reportedly dates back to World War II. In addition to this, sources reveal that these governments were unaware of the change of hands from Crypto to CIA and BND.
