DHAKA: Bengali English teacher, Maherin Chowdhury, reportedly killed attempting to save her students after an Air Force fighter jet crashed into her school and erupted on fire, laid to rest in her home district.

According to a Reuters report, in the aftermath of the crash, Chowdhury rushed to save some of the students and teachers from the danger, choosing to put her life at risk to save theirs. Chowdhury, 46-years-old, entered the burning classroom repeatedly to rescue her students even though her clothes were reportedly “engulfed in flames” as confirmed by her brother, Munaf Mojib Chowdhury.

Chowdhury, who passed away on Monday had suffered near total burns on her body and is survived by her husband and two sons. 

Speaking to Reuters via telephone, the deceased’s brother said despite her husband’s plea to think of their children, [Maherin] Chowdhury “refused, saying ‘they are also my children, they are burning. How can I leave them?’” Chowdhury further informed Reuters, that even though he is not certain of the numbers of survivors saved by his sister, he believes she managed to rescue about twenty people.

Bengali teacher, Maherin Chowdhury, bravely sacrificed life to save students after military jet crashed in her school.

The fateful crash of the F-7 BGI resulted in the deaths of at least twenty-nine people, mostly children, who were trapped in the fire and under the debris. According to military sources, the crash was the result of a mechanical failure. The jet had reportedly taken off from a nearby airbase for a routine training mission. The pilot attempted to divert the aircraft away from populated areas however, it crashed into the school campus. The pilot was reportedly among those killed in the crash. 

Headmistress of the school’s primary section, Khadija Akter, informed reporters that while others were running around to save themselves, Maherin Chowdhury was running to “save others”

The honorable academic was laid to rest on Tuesday in her home district in Northern Bangladesh.
