At least ten people have been killed and more than a dozen injured in a mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, during a community event marking the first night of Hanukkah.
New South Wales Police confirmed that one of the shooters was killed at the scene, while a second suspect is in custody in critical condition. Authorities have declared the area safe, with no ongoing threat, but investigations are continuing.
The attack occurred around 6:40 p.m. local time near Bondi Park Playground, where hundreds had gathered for “Chanukah by the Sea,” an annual family-friendly celebration organized by the local Jewish community.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as gunshots rang out, with crowds fleeing in panic. Footage verified by media outlets showed two armed individuals firing from an elevated position. One bystander heroically disarmed a gunman, potentially saving lives.
Among the injured are two police officers and a staff member from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. At least 12-18 victims were transported to hospitals across Sydney.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident “shocking and distressing.
“The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing,” Albanese said in a statement. “Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.”
Jewish community leaders, including Alex Ryvchin of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, suggested the attack appeared targeted, describing it as a “horrific” assault on a joyful occasion. Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the violence, referring to the perpetrators as “vile terrorists.”
“Emergency responders at the scene following the mass shooting at Bondi Beach.
“Police and medical personnel treating victims amid the chaos at Bondi Beach.”
“Armed police securing the area after the attack on Sunday evening.”
Bondi Beach, often ranked among the world’s best, is a symbol of Australian coastal life and home to a significant Jewish population in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs.
This rare mass shooting in Australia has drawn widespread condemnation, with Muslim community leaders also denouncing the violence. The incident is still developing, with police urging the public to avoid the area.
