The looming threat of dengue is back for another season and this time cases are high.

Pakistan experiences a spell of dengue every few months. Each year, people are caught off guard and suffer at the hands of this threat.

With symptoms such as high fevers, aching bones, and red rashes people come reporting to hospitals every season. The clear signs prompt the doctor to instantly recognize and cater to the patient.

This reveals the need to spread awareness among the citizens. The government should acknowledge this looming threat and issue alerts every now and then.

According to reports, Pakistan is seeing a rise in dengue cases again. To quote health authorities in Punjab, there were over thirty-one thousand cases this year alone.

For instance, Lahore alone, reported five hundred and eighty cases. Within 24 hours, sixty-eight cases were recorded from Samanabad, Allama Iqbal, and Cantt. which were marked as high-risk zones.

Health officials stated that the actual count is likely much higher as all cases aren’t reported. Moreover, private clinics and hospitals continue to observe an influx of patients suffering from dengue.

The Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) issued a Dengue Alert, warning about the  current situation  — temperatures between 26°C–29°C, humidity above 60%, and water logging caused by floods — are breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Pakistan Meteorological DepartmentAccording to PMD’s recent analysis, September and December are marked as high risk periods for 2025. For instance, major cities like Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Multan are all very vulnerable to this threat.

Additionally, factors such as floods, stagnant water bodies, and poor sanitation have made urban neighborhoods and relief shelters into high threat zones.

Authorities are staying highly alert ensuring continuous surveillance, fumigation drives, and public awareness campaigns.

Dengue Fumigation

Despite this hike in cases, the federal capital has moved a lot closer to becoming dengue-free.

As per the surveillance report, around twenty-nine thousand sites were  inspected all across Islamabad. During anti-larvae operations, dengue larvae was found at 80 sites but only two were declared negative.
