Washington: The Taliban delegation and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks via video conference, during which intra-Afghan talks and regional security were discussed.
According to a report by a foreign news agency, the talks between Mike Pompeo and the Taliban delegation also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and the historic agreement reached in the past.
A spokesman for the Taliban’s Qatar office confirmed the talks. Sohail Shaheen said that Taliban deputy Mullah Baradar also participated in the conference talks. The Taliban talked about the withdrawal of foreign troops from Pompeo and the release of more prisoners.
The spokesman said that intra-Afghan talks and reduction of violence were also discussed in the video conference.
Given that the Taliban and the Afghan government have agreed to hold bilateral talks, the two sides will hold an important meeting in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
This will be the first regular meeting between the Taliban and the Afghan government, named as ‘Intra-Afghan Dialogue’. In the past, the Taliban have been refusing to talk to the Afghan leadership. When will the meeting between the parties begin? No final date has been announced.
