Suella Braverman has said migrants who cross the Channel from Calais to the UK are doing so ‘illegally’ and are ‘criminals’. The home secretary was speaking before MPs debate the illegal migration bill for the final time.

Braverman has tabled amendments to make the bill potentially even more incompatible with international law, after a UNHCR representative warned that the government’s plans to curtail the rights of asylum seekers could lead to the collapse of the system of international protection for refugees.

Earlier, British Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s remarks that British-Pakistani men hold cultural values at odds with British values are heavily criticised by political commentators and children’s charities as inflammatory.

Social media reports suggest the remarks akin to initiating race wars.
