VALENCIA (2nd November, 2024): Nearly 2,000 people reported missing after Spain’s coastal city of Valencia hit by monstrous storm forcing Palma to go into lockdown over fear the tourist hotspot of Majorca may be the next target.
Valencia, which is Spain’s third-largest city, located on the Mediterranean coast known for its unique cultural and architectural heritage was terribly hit by floods caused by climate change on 30 October. Authorities have put Palma under lockdown urging residents and tourists alike to stay inside over fear of similar devastation after the country’s national weather service warned mass floods headed for Majorca.
According to media reports, so far, more than 200 people have been confirmed dead across Spain although authorities fear the numbers could rise in the coming days.

Authorities have closed down parks, gardens and cemeteries till Monday and evacuated the homeless from flood zones. On the other hand, Palma’s promenade has been cordoned off with red tape. Javier Bonet, the city’s first deputy mayor has informed people to come out only if it is “absolutely necessary”. Bonet reportedly said that although Palma is not on red alert, it is essential that people be warned against “greater risks”.
Earlier today, Spain’s national weather service Aemet declared that parts of Majorca could be battered with up to 120mm of water in three to four hours. After which authorities in Palma have instituted serious weather warnings which are expected to last through the weekend, with public spaces being closed down. According to a report by the Daily Mail, the decision comes as rescue operations continue in Valencia with officials searching for bodies in stranded cars while residents attempt to salvage what they can from homes devastated in the storm.
Officials have reported 205 deaths with 155 confirmed deaths in the eastern Valencia region alone. Following the devastation caused in the coastal city, British Prime Minister (PM) Keir Starmer offered condolences and assured that the “UK stands with Spain”.

On Thursday, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez said: “Our priority is to find the victims and the missing so we can help end the suffering of their families”.
In the wake of the devastation, scientists have explained that the deluge occurred because of a phenomenon locally known as DANA (acronym for high-altitude isolated depression). Scientists explained that such a phenomenon can occur independently. Further to this, Aemet’s spokesperson said: “Forecasts were in line with what happened. But in an area between Utiel and Chiva, in the province of Valencia, rainfall exceeded 300 litres per square meter. In that area, storm systems formed and regenerated continuously”.

DANA occurs when cold air blows over the Mediterranean water causing hot air to rise and form dense, water-laden clouds that can remain over the same area for many hours. Meteorologists have confirmed that such events can result in hail storms and tornados as seen in Valencia this week.
Spain’s King Felipe expressed “condolences and sadness” over the loss of lives and observed a minute of silence for the victims of the Valencia mass floods.
