NewYork, 31st, May: United States President Donald Trump is planning to conduct the expanded Group of Seven leaders meeting in the Autumn.

According to reports, Trump is keen to have in-person G-7 meeting in fall as the Pandemic fades, potentially after the November election, postponing efforts to hold the event in June at Camp David.

Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, said he’d like to extend an invitation to leaders from Russia, Australia, India, and South Korea as well the current participants, calling the setup “outdated” at the moment.

White House spokeswoman Alyssa Farah had said that Trump wants to conduct the G-7 meeting with the traditional allies as well as those impacted by COVID-19.

Trump also intends to discuss the future of China, the world’s No. 2 economy which isn’t among Trump’s proposed attendees after tensions between Washington and Beijing are high over the coronavirus pandemic and Hong Kong.

Trump Announces Suspension of US Immigration

Trump is planning to invite Australia instead, which has joined the US in criticizing China about the spread of the coronavirus around the world.

A move to invite Russia is controversial, as Russia was suspended in 2014 when it was also a part of the Group of Eight major economies after its annexation of Crimea. Trump has mused before about Moscow being back into the fold.

Trump said that the meeting could be held the weekend before or the weekend after the UN General Assembly, which is scheduled to open, potentially virtually, not in person on Sept. 15 and run through Sept. 30.

“Maybe I’ll do it after the election,” Trump said. “I think a good time would be before the election.” The U.S. presidential election is Nov. 3.

“So it might be a G-10, G-11, and it could be after the election is over,” Trump said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is yet not sure whether she will be able to travel to the US in June for a physical G-7 meeting and her participation is unconfirmed.

Trump spoke to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and French President Emmanuel Macron in recent days about progress on convening the G-7 in person. It’s unclear if either committed to a June gathering or encouraged a postponement.

Current G-7 members apart from the U.S., Germany, France and the U.K. are Japan, Canada, and Italy.
