President Donald Trump has said that his administration would allow 600,000 Chinese students to enter the United States for education, and reiterated that Chinese President Xi Jinping had invited him to visit China.

This apparent softening in tone came shortly after the Chinese Embassy in Washington issued an advisory urging students to be cautious about choosing Houston as their destination in the U.S.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the U.S. would welcome more Chinese students and emphasized a desire for better relations with China. “We’re going to get along good with China,” Trump remarked, while again referencing an invitation from Xi Jinping to visit the country.

The statement followed a complaint by the Chinese Embassy in the U.S., which reported that several Chinese students had faced “unreasonable checks” by customs officers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, including inspections of their electronic devices.

The embassy said these incidents had caused concern and anxiety among Chinese students and families, prompting the travel advisory.
