US President Donald Trump has vetoed a bipartisan resolution seeking to limit his powers to wage war on Iran, calling it “very insulting”.

“This was a very insulting resolution, introduced by Democrats as part of a strategy to win an election on November 3 by dividing the Republican Party,” Trump said in a statement released by the White House.

Trump says Congress misinterpreted his constitutional authority as being limited to “defense of the United States and its forces against imminent attack.”

“That is incorrect,” he said.

“We live in a hostile world of evolving threats, and the Constitution recognizes that the President must be able to anticipate our adversaries’ next moves and take swift and decisive action in response. That’s what I did!”

The resolution said the US president cannot commit his military to hostilities against Iran or any part of its government or military without explicit authorization from Congress.

Supporters said they wanted to ensure that Congress had the unique power to declare war, as outlined in the US Constitution.

US-Iran tensions have risen since Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in 2018 and reimposed sanctions.

But Washington’s hostility skyrocketed in early January with a US drone strike that killed top Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani.

Iran responded with a rocket attack on two military bases in Iraq housing US troops. More than 100 US troops were later diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries caused by the attack.
