Turkey offers to take charge of Kabul Airport

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he is planning to hold talks with the hardline Islamist Taliban group on the issue of keeping Kabul Airport operational after the withdrawal of United States (US) troops from Afghanistan.

Although Ankara’s offer has already been rejected by the Taliban, the Turkish president has expressed “good wishes” and said he intends to negotiate with the Taliban. Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Erdogan said, “By the will of God, we will see where our talks with the Taliban take us.”

Turkey has been in talks with US defense officials for some time about its offer to provide all possible assistance and cooperation to make Kabul Airport safe and operational. Keeping the Kabul Airport safe, stable and operational is a key step in maintaining a diplomatic presence in the war-torn country of Afghanistan, especially at a time when the Afghan mainland has been on the ground for decades. The withdrawal of Western troops from Afghanistan is nearing completion.

Turkey has deployed hundreds of troops in Afghanistan, but a Turkish government official told media that Turkish troops in Afghanistan were “not part of the combat force.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Joe Biden discussed the issue in their first face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in June. Ankara and Washington have been discussing issues such as funding and logistics for the NATO mission from Turkey and the US. This has also been confirmed by US and NATO officials.

Last week, the Taliban rejected Turkey’s offer, calling it “reprehensible.” The militant group had said, “We consider the stay of foreign forces in our homeland as an occupation, no matter what the pretext is.”

Erdogan responded by saying that the Taliban were not taking a “correct view”. “We think that the Taliban’s view at the moment is not how a Muslim treats another Muslim,” he said.
