Baaghi TV: Turkey’s Defense Ministry said in a tweet that in addition to F-16 fighter jets, warships have taken part in the exercises. Their purpose is to review the military readiness of the Armed Forces and increase their operational capability.

The announcement comes at a time when Turkey and Greece, members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), are under intense tensions over gas and oil exploration in the eastern part of the Mediterranean.

A day earlier, Turkey had announced the discovery of abundant gas reserves in the Black Sea. Two weeks ago, Turkey had sent a ship to the region to search for oil and gas reserves, along with naval warships for protection.

Greece claims ownership of the waters and says it alone has the right to explore and extract oil and gas there. Greece sent ships to the Aegean Sea in response to Turkey’s action and ordered its troops to remain alert. France also sent warships and aircraft to joint military exercises with Greece in the disputed waters.

Relations between Turkey and Greece have traditionally been strained for some time. The two countries have been at war three times since the 1970s. On one of these occasions, they came close to fighting over the rights to explore for oil and gas in the Aegean Sea.

It should be noted that the Aegean Sea is located between the two countries and serves as a boundary.
