Lahore, 26th August: TV dramas nowadays have been seen portraying certain toxic themes to the audiences that are leading our future generations astray. All current TV serials have been promoting negative narratives filled with hatred and vengeance.

Ishq Hai,’ the latest drama starring Danish Taimoor and Minal Khan, perfectly exemplifies the above-made point. In the drama, Danish Taimoor’s character, Shahzaib, kidnaps Isra (Minal Khan) on the day of her wedding. He then forces her to marry him by pointing a gun at himself and pressurizes her to accept his proposal. This criminal act was portrayed to be some sort of act of heroism on behalf of Shahzaib’s ‘true love’ for Isra.

Not only is this projecting a false narrative about love to our younger generations, but is also showing them ways to blackmail and pressurize a girl. Rather than portraying the emotion of love as a respectable and selfless feeling, it is shown to be an intense obsession and borderline craziness.

Dramas are a part of our daily routines and have an unconscious impact on our way of thinking. However, such storylines lead the viewers astray rather than creating awareness and guiding them towards the right path. Our society needs to be guided about consent, that when a person says no, it means no. Yet, these dramas blur the importance of such values and show utopian consequences to heinous acts.

Where is the diversity in our dramas today?

Moreover, in another drama ‘Wafa Be Mol,’ Behroze Sabzwari’s character has been shown to be an uptight and conservative father. In one scene, he catches his daughter-in-law hugging her brother-in-law as they celebrate his new job.

Behroze Sabzwari admonishes the two on their display of affection. According to our religion and culture, this act was wrong and Sabzwari’s character is justified to condemn them, however, his son replies saying that ‘Father, your thinking is wrong.’

This one dialogue, supported with sad music in the background, made Behroze Sabzwari the villain and the son, a hero in the eyes of the viewers.

The problem with these narratives is that they encourage such indecent actions to creep into our society and culture as well. The viewers no longer consider their actions to be wrong, for their thinking has unconsciously been engineered by these dramas.

This will not only lead to our younger generations going astray but will also wash away our culture, as they will have been influenced by notions of the West.
