WASHINGTON DC — November 27, 2025: Two members of the US National Guard were critically wounded on Wednesday after a lone gunman opened fire just two blocks from the White House, in an incident US President Donald Trump has labelled an “act of terror”. The attack triggered heightened security across the capital, emergency political statements, and an immediate policy response targeting Afghan immigrants.
Key Highlights:
- Two US National Guard members critically injured after being ambushed near the White House.
- Suspect reportedly an Afghan SIV holder, though US officials have not confirmed his identity.

According to Al Jazeera, the suspect — whose identity has not been officially released — is a 29-year-old Afghan national who reportedly served over a decade in the Afghan Army alongside US Special Forces. The shooting occurred at approximately 2:15pm local time near a busy Metro station. Witnesses described a scene of panic as shots rang out, with bystanders fleeing and emergency personnel rushing to aid the wounded soldiers.

President Trump announced that federal agencies were treating the attack as a national security matter. He accused the Biden administration of enabling the suspect’s entry into the country and ordered an immediate review of all immigration cases linked to Afghan nationals.
Shortly after, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced it was suspending all immigration requests from Afghan nationals indefinitely, pending further security vetting.

Heavy deployment of law enforcement was visible across Washington DC, including National Guard units, Capitol Police and federal agencies. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that Trump has requested 500 additional troops for the capital.
Several American leaders — including former President Barack Obama and former President Joe Biden — condemned the attack and urged calm. Despite early confusion, officials later clarified that both soldiers remain alive but in critical condition.

Analysts told Al Jazeera that the close proximity to the White House was “likely intentional” and aimed at drawing maximum attention. The FBI has taken over the investigation.
Israel’s president and foreign minister also issued statements expressing solidarity with Washington.
The attack comes amid increased political tensions and follows previous instances of violence targeting US political figures and institutions.
