Eight months after Israel, supported by the U.S. and the European Union, launched a continuous and devastating attack on Gaza, the American Secretary of State made a public statement declaring that Israel had “effectively lost sovereignty in the northern quadrant.” Anthony Blinken referred to cities near Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, where around 100,000 people have been evacuated due to Hezbollah’s rocket attacks.
Over the past seven months, the US has steadily increased pressure on Israel. It has privately & publicly opposed Israel, distancing herself from the massacre that continues to evoke world rage. U.S has also stopped vetoing critical resolutions at the United Nations, and sanctioned Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.

However, being Israel’s largest supplier of weapons and ammunition, the US provides $3.8 billion in military aid annually to ensure Israel’s military advantage in the region. In May 2024, the US Congress passed a bill granting an additional $14 billion in military support. However, the Biden administration has, for the first time, delayed a shipment of munitions to Israel, pausing the delivery of thousands of ammunitions and bombs.
Why is the US now using its most substantial influence over Israel?
Firstly, the US and many Western countries think that a coordinated attack on Hamas in Rafah would result in significant civilian casualties and a humanitarian disaster.

Secondly, the US aims to pressure Israel’s cabinet to support a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. But an all-out confrontation with Hamas means ensuring a push back to any kind of agreement efforts.
Lastly, domestic US politics play a role. President Biden faces significant pressure from Democratic supporters to moderate his support for Israel, voters who as decent human beings are enraged at these atrocities. After all, Biden cannot afford to completely ignore the American voters’ wish, especially during an election year.
If the US delays arms sales to Israel, other countries, including the UK, may face growing pressure to do the same. While such restrictions would be more symbolic than practical, they would contribute to Israel’s diplomatic isolation.
