UK announces new aviation sanctions against Russia

Feb 17, 2022: According to a report by AFP, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will visit several European countries this week, her office said on Thursday, adding that it was continuing diplomatic efforts to prevent a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Britain’s top diplomat will meet with his Ukrainian and Polish counterparts during visits to both countries before attending the Munich Security Conference in the southern German city on Saturday. A spokesman for Germany’s foreign ministry confirmed on Wednesday that the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) most developed countries would discuss the Ukraine crisis at a meeting.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this week, is expected to address the G7 conference, which will also be attended by U.S Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The UK Foreign Office did not say when Truss would leave for London on her latest diplomatic trip, following her intense visit to Moscow last week. She received a cold welcome there by her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, as Britain pressed hard on Russia’s military readiness on its western border with Ukraine.

The visit will focus on nations respecting the sovereignty of others and urge Russia to take the diplomatic path. Her office released a statement saying, “We are ready to talk, but we are very clear — if they decide to continue down the path of aggression, there will be massive consequences bringing Russia severe economic costs and pariah status.”

The UK government last week signed new legislation giving it the power to impose tougher and wider sanctions on Russia if Moscow escalates its aggression against Ukraine. Along with the U.S, it is urging allies to impose a significant package of collective sanctions if Russian troops enter its western neighbor.

NATO warned on Wednesday that it saw no sign that Russia was withdrawing its forces, as Moscow had indicated.
