UNGA adopts Pakistan sponsored resolution #baaghi

Dec 27, 2021: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by Pakistan, calling for a multi-pronged approach to combat all forms of misinformation that harm human rights.

The resolution, entitled “Countering Disinformation for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms”, was recommended by the third Committee of the 193-member UNGA Assembly, which deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues.

With the cooperation of a large number of countries, this was the result of extensive consultations with all member countries, amid a persistent spread of misinformation around the world, an infodemic, nationalism, social discord, the pandemic, discrimination, and hate speech.

Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, while expressing satisfaction over the unanimous approval of the resolution, said that this result was due to the hard work of our team.

He further said that Pakistan, in collaboration with other member states and international organizations, would continue its efforts to fully implement the resolution and tackle the global virus of misinformation.

Under its terms, the resolution also highlights the negative effects of the rapid spread of misinformation through online platforms and social media on the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms. It notes with concern that technology has been misused to create, disseminate and propagate false information for political, ideological, or commercial purposes.

The UNGA resolution further states that the recent infodemic reinforces the need for freedom of expression which is not only a right but also a shared responsibility, and that the response to the spread of false information is in line with international human rights law.

It also emphasizes the responsibility of businesses, including online platforms and social media companies, to ensure that their business objectives do not infringe on human rights. They should not be allowed to use their platforms to spread misinformation, which leads to discrimination, hatred, enmity, violence and polarization.

The resolution adopted in the UNGA also reaffirms the responsibility of states to combat the spread of misinformation that undermines the promotion of peace and cooperation between states as a result of misinformation campaigns against states and nations.
