US Ready to Introduce New Program for Afghan Refugees
US President Joe Biden’s administration will be launching a new plan to resettle some Afghan refugees in certain parts of the United States.
According to foreign news agency Reuters, these actions have been confirmed by a US administration official and two independent sources.
The US State Department is expected to formally announce the plan in the next few days, dubbed “Priority to Refugee.”
The State Department has so far declined to comment.
This news arrived as US troops prepare to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of the month, and the Taliban’s influence in the war-torn country continues to grow. Biden is under intense pressure from lawmakers and social rights groups to do something about the Afghans who have sided with US forces in the ongoing war in the region, as they could be a target of Taliban retaliation.
This new program will benefit Afghans who have been involved in US-funded programs, NGOs, and the media, administration officials said.
According to reports, it was stated that Afghans who worked as translators or for the US government would not be eligible for the Special Immigration Visa (SIV) program.
With more than 200 SIV applicants in their final stages, a number of families arrived in the United States last week. Over 50,000 people will come to the US under this program.
They were stationed at a military base in Virginia, where they will be resettled in other parts of the country after the necessary procedures.
