US threatens to bar flights from Chinese carriers

The Trump administration threatened that it will ban Chinese passenger airlines flying to and from the United States (US) starting later this month.

According to details, the Trump administration said it will bar mainland Chinese airlines this month unless Beijing relaxes restrictions on American airlines.

The US Department of Transportation (DoT) said on Wednesday it would block any scheduled passenger flight by a Chinese carrier from June 16, in an escalation of the two countries’ tussle over which flights should be allowed during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Should the CAAC adjust its policies to bring about the necessary improved situation for U.S. carriers, the Department is fully prepared to revisit the action it has announced in this order,” the Department of Transportation said in its Wednesday order.

The threat of a ban was the latest sign of souring US-China relations that are at their worst in more than three decades.

The order would require final approval from President Trump, and DoT said that “The action may go into effect before June 16, if the President so orders”.

If it were to go ahead it would affect four Chinese carriers currently operating reduced flights to the United States – Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.
