Oct 18, 2021: The school said one person was killed and seven others were injured in a shooting at Louisiana’s Grambling State University on Sunday (October 17th) morning, the second such fatal incident on campus in less than a week.
One of the injured was a university student, while the others were not, Grambling State posted on Twitter. They said the shooting took place around 1 a.m during homecoming weekend. More homecoming programs for Sunday were canceled, and classes for Monday and Tuesday were canceled. A curfew has been imposed on campus from 9.30pm to 6am, the school said.
Grambling State University is a public, historically black university in Grambling, Louisiana.
The school tweeted the student was “treated for non-life-threatening injuries”, and the person killed was not enrolled at the university.
It is the second shooting in less than a week, although the incidents are not believed to be connected, at the historically Black college in the southern US state.
The school tweeted early Sunday, “Gramfam, now is the time to irrationally unite as we rally to comfort each other after this morning’s incident.”
A subsequent tweet urged students to refrain from spreading false information about the investigation.
The LSP is asking for help in locating a suspect or suspect in the shooting, Louisiana State Police said in a statement posted on Facebook.
“Any information, even the smallest detail, can be important in this investigation.”
Officers also released the name and photo of a suspect in the same campus shooting.
The Sunday shooting came just days after a non-student was fatally shot by another non-student early on Wednesday in front of the university’s Favrot Student Union building, Grambling State said.
The university said on last Wednesday that it would increase security on campus after that shooting. Louisiana State Police, who are investigating both incidents, said the two shootings are believed to be unrelated.
The agency said it had identified Jatavious Carroll, 18, also known as “Rabbit”, as a suspect in Wednesday’s shooting. The agency asked for help in locating him.
