Uzbekistan Shot Down Afghan Plane For Airspace Violation

August 16, 2021: An Afghan Air Force aircraft was shot down by the Uzbekistan air defense system while attempting to trespass, the Uzbek Defense Ministry told media.

On Monday, photographs and video footage were circulated on the internet showing parts of the crashed plane of the Afghan Air Force. It is indicated that the incident took place in the Sherabad district of the Surxondaryo region in Uzbekistan on the evening of August 15, 2021. The Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan confirmed to media about the air space violation by the plane and its crash, specifying that an investigation was underway.

An employee of the Termez branch of the Republican Scientific Center of Emergency Medical Services (RSCEMS) told media that two pilots survived and are in a hospital in Termez, however, their condition is serious.

“On August 15, in the Sherabad district of the Surxondaryo region, the air defense forces of the Air Force of Uzbekistan suppressed an attempt to illegally cross the air border of Uzbekistan by an Afghan military aircraft,” said a spokesman for the country’s defense ministry.

The situation in Afghanistan has aggravated in recent weeks, with the offensive of members of the Taliban movement on large cities. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country, he said, “to prevent the bloodshed.” On Monday night, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, Mohammad Naim, said that the war in Afghanistan is over, and the form of government in the state will become clear in the near future.

The Uzbek defense minister said the plane was targeted for violating airspace, but the Afghan government has not yet responded.
