Weightlifting and Muscle Strength: What is the connection?

Islamabad (18th Feb, 2020): According to a recent scientific study, reducing the amount of weight lifted for exercise may help to improve performance.

The research team believes that performance can be improved if the amount of weight lifted during exercise is reduced. Their reasoning being that the “velocity-based training” [VBT] helps to improve muscle fatigue. According to the researchers at the University of Lincoln, weightlifters can enhance their performance by a range of measurement that vary as per amount of weight they lift during their training and exercise sessions, respectively.

According to them, the exercises may include pressups, situps, and/or lifting weights, ideally as many as can be easily managed by the person. They stress that for athletes, these types of exercises are extremely vital, especially for those who rely primarily on muscle strength.

The researchers studies sixteen men between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine years with at least two years of experience in weightlifting. They then categorized the participants into two groups. The first group used PBT [performance-based training] and was finished in six weeks while the other group trained with VBT [velocity-based training]. It thereby helped to determine the maximum weight for each participant. Following which, the PBT group did training based on lifting a percentage of the total weight they could lift. Whereas, the VBT group did a warmups that allowed the research team to measure their performance in comparison to their previous ones.

The research team further worked around the amount of weightlifting that the VBT group participated in. If any weightlifter was able to lift less weights the team would reduce the amount. Conversely, the weight would be increased if a weightlifter was able to lift with consistency.

Accordingly, at the beginning of the six week training program, the weightlifters had to perform a bench press, conventional deadlift, strict overhead press, countermovement jump, and even squat press et cetera. The exercises were repeated at the end of the study to determine the effectiveness of the PBT and VBT training regimes and the difference between them.

It was inferred that the weightlifters who used VBT training increased their performance compared to the PBT group. According to Dr. Dorrell of the study:
