West Bank: Four Palestinians shot and killed in Israeli army raid

Aug 16, 2021: At least four Palestinians have been shot dead during a clash with Israeli forces at a Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

Saleh Mohammad Ammar, 19, and Raid Ziad Abu Saif, 21, were shot Monday and rushed to Jenin City Hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries.

“Two citizens arrived at the emergency department, shot by the Israeli army, and died shortly afterwards, succumbing to their injuries,” a source at the hospital was quoted as saying by local media.

According to sources, the bodies of two other people, one identified as Noor Jarar and the other as Amjad Iyad Azmi, were taken by Israeli forces.

The governor of Jenin confirmed the deaths.

At least two other Palestinians were arrested. One was shot in the hand and the other, identified as Muhammad Abu Zina, was taken from his home during the raid. Meanwhile, funeral processions for the slain men began in the Jenin refugee camp.

Eyewitnesses said that a group of Palestinians were engaged in clashes with members of the Israeli police. The unit’s agents usually infiltrate the Palestinian territories with the intention of arresting people.

None of the Israeli forces was wounded in the incident. They were reportedly on a mission to detain an individual, police said.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in the northern occupied West Bank, mainly in Jenin and Beta. Beta sees regular demonstrations against illegal Israeli occupation and settlement expansion, which often lead to clashes. Many Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured in fighting against Israeli forces.

Nearly half a million people live in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, alongside 2.8 million Palestinians.

Palestinians have been protesting daily since May to express anger at a checkpoint for illegal Israeli settlers near Beita. The settlement was evacuated in early July, but Israeli troops are still there and authorities are considering its fate. If the settlement is approved, its founders will be allowed to reside there permanently.

The residents of Beita have vowed to continue their campaign until the army leaves the checkpoint.

The occupied West Bank is part of the territory where a Palestinian state is envisaged under the two-state solution.

Israel occupied the West Bank during the 1967 war, and most of its settlements are considered illegal by most of the international community.

Israeli forces often carry out raids in various parts of the West Bank, where they detain and often kill Palestinians.
