WhatsApp Crackdown in India Shuts Down 2 Million Accounts

California, Silicon Valley: Social networking giant WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, shut down 2 million accounts in India for spreading fake news and misinformation.

WhatsApp is taking steps to prevent fake news and misinformation, and in view of this campaign, it closed down 2 million accounts of Indian users for spreading wrong news and misinformation.

The company says it acted in accordance with the new information technology laws, closing 2 million accounts within a month through which false and harmful information was shared.

The report said that there are concrete reasons for shutting down these accounts as these users violated WhatsApp terms and conditions from May 15 to June 15 this year.

The company said preventing the spread of harmful and unsolicited messages was the main target and that it blocks 8 million accounts every month.

It should be noted that the leading messaging application WhatsApp has more than 400 million users in India and WhatsApp has released the first report under India’s new controversial social media laws.

It is to be noted that WhatsApp was bought by Facebook in 2014 for $16 billion.
