Why did Macron visit China?

China’s diplomatic coup in brokering an agreement between Saudi Arab & Iran, was a step that swept China upwards in stature. The agreement is a game changer. Though France is an ally to Ukraine, and has already sent 18 Caesar howitzers to Ukraine, Defence Minister Lecornu stated its for defending Ukraine only.

However, France wants the war to end in Ukraine. The main purpose of the visit was to ask Xi Jinping to impress upon Moscow the need to put an end to what seems to be a long-drawn-out war. Both Macron & Biden had agreed on a telephone exchange to seek Beijing’s help in achieving Moscow’s withdrawal from Kyiv.

Interestingly, though China claims neutrality in this conflict- it has strengthened its relationship with Kremlin in 2022 besides a state visit by Xi Jinping to Moscow not very long ago.

Beijing had already sent out a paper, laying out 12 points, calling for a ceasefire between Moscow & Kyiv. The points included end of sanctions against Russia by the western nations, setting up a corridor for exit of civilians & strategy to ensure exporting grain. It also makes a mention to put an end to the “Cold War mentality”. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy agreed with the need to co-operate with China.

What is clear is, even if China acts as the negotiator, nothing is going to transpire overnight. There are going to be negotiations back and forth before one sees light of the day.
