Why is Mehwish Hayat top trending on Twitter?
Lahore, 6th October: Pakistani actress Mahwish Hayat has come under fire from social media users and celebrities for her recent biscuit advertisement.
Actress Mehwish Hayat embroiled in controversy pertaining to a new advertisement, for a local biscuit company, which has reportedly taken the nation by storm.
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has also directed a review of the advertisement’s content.
The Chhalawa actress shared the advertisement on her Twitter handle with the caption “Let me take you on a majestic journey of our #des, as the most awaited #deskayqissay is unveiled.” She went on to tweet that filming for the television commercial (TVC) was a pleasure since it provided her with the opportunity to “cherish the cultural diversity of our des”.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Ali Muhammad Khan slammed the actress as she can be seen dancing in the TVC.
Similarly, Pakistan journalist Ansar Abbasi was one of the first people to report about the “indecent moves” in the advertisement. He pointed out about the obscene dance moves and that too for a biscuit commercial which he considered “highly uncalled for”.
It is to be noted that while the advertisement has been harshly criticized by many, there have been some including, Minister Fawad Chaudhry who has questioned the motives of those calling the TVC un-Islamic. The Minister for Science & Technology tweeted that such people, namely Ansar Abbasi and Ali Muhammad Khan, should “Do something productive”.
Meanwhile, Mehwish Hayat has also chipped in with her own reaction to the ongoing controversy. The actress tweeted, “I don’t need your approval, darling. I have my own!”

However, after the issuance of the said advisory by PEMRA, a debate erupted on social media in which some termed the move of PEMRA as right and some as wrong.
Since yesterday, Twitter has been trending with the hashtags of MehwishHayat, GalaBiscuit, ApnayDesKaHurrRungHayaWaala.
Twitteratis have been pouring in different messages on the social website. Some users posted harsh comments and condemned the actress and the creative heads of the advertisement company:
