Why the West has fewer beds per capita?

In these confusing times where everyone is looking at data, analytics and Epidemiology bombarded on their minds through media, some things are to be seen in perspective.

Why is the West in such a panic mode during this Corona fiasco? We should try to understand their society and tremendous advancements they have achieved in areas of science, technology and healthcare system.

[bs-quote quote=”The whole concept of democracy in these countries revolves around provision of these facilities and that too at a very advanced and sophisticated level.” style=”style-17″ align=”center” color=”#dd0000″ author_name=”Faisal Bukhari”][/bs-quote]

The people in the west takes the best facilities for granted. Over a period of their progress in decades they believe with conviction that they are the best and rightly so. They are not used to believing that they are not able to address and cope any catastrophe.

The primary and secondary healthcare in these countries is at such an advanced stage that they usually dont need tertiary care at a large scale. Most of the patients are treated so well that they go home after being treated at primary care or at the most at secondary health care systems. Only complicated and advanced stages of disease are hospitalized and the majority of such patients are old age people.

With such robust healthcare system the beds needed for hospitalization are adequate in routine. With this pandemic the situation is therefore alarming for them when the need for hospitalization has surged so tremendously. Furthermore, unlike the developing countries each citizen is to be provided the same standards of treatment and equipment needed. This is the basic reason of panic and the stress upon the pressure on healthcare system. This is why when the patients are treated in the corridors of hospitals, it is a BIG NEWS.

We need to analyze the situation in the developing countries with some perspective. We should not compare our system with the west. No doubt the healthcare system in the west should be replicated but we are neither used to it nor have the resources to be at par. The problem today is that we are trying to draw parallels with the west where it is not advisable: at least for now.

We must address the issue with our system and society otherwise we will loose sight of the basic issues and facilities in hand. The sane approach is to follow the trends and addressing them with an out-of-the-box solutions based on our existing system.

[bs-quote quote=”Trying to replicate the west will only aggravate the panic and unrest because we cant achieve it over days or weeks or even years.” style=”style-17″ align=”center” color=”#dd0000″ author_name=”Faisal Bukhari”][/bs-quote]

Lets do what we are best at. It is understandable that our best is worse than the worst of the west but lets be realistic. When seen with this perspective our sense of panic is far lesser than the west and we should bank this on cultural, social and demographic differences.

One death in the west, no matter how inevitable, means much more panic than we are used to.

This pandemic will bring a paradigm shift in how the world look at its healthcare systems. Developing countries will see a progress whereas the west will auto correct its state of the art healthcare system with a more logical and practical approach. The health insurance will be revisited and so will be their tertiary hospitals system.
