Wild fires in southern France cause thousands to evacuate
Aug 17, 2021: The fire service says thousands of people have been evacuated in southern France due to a forest wild fire near the luxurious resort of Saint Tropez.
About 7,750 firefighters and drones battled the wildfire blaze in harsh conditions with high temperatures and high winds.
“Thousands of people have been evacuated as a precaution, but no one has been affected,” a fire service spokeswoman said Tuesday.
France is the latest in a number of Mediterranean countries to be hit by extreme weather and wild fires, with meteorologists warning that man-made global warming could make wildfires of the sort even more common.
The blaze, which spread about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Mediterranean city of Toulon on Monday, covered more than 3,500 hectares (8,600 acres) of forest and has already razed large portions of the forest and scrub land.
The forced evacuation as a result of the wild fire took place mainly around St. Tropez and the villages of Le Mole and Grimaude.
The Var Prefecture confirmed that several camp sites have been cleared and people have been told to avoid congestion on the roads around the Gulf of St. Tropez so that emergency services can reach the area.
Forest wild fires have already erupted this summer around the Mediterranean basin, including Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Algeria and Morocco.
