According to Baaghi TV, courts in Turkey have initiated proceedings against those accused in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The hearing was conducted in Istanbul, Turkey. He was murdered in the Consulate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Istanbul. Jamal Khashoggi’s Turkish fiancee was also present during the proceedings. United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary, or Arbitrary executions, was also present in the courtroom.

The murder trial is being conducted in the absence of the accused who are Saudis. The prosecution issued arrest warrants for them.

In a statement during the proceedings, Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancee said that it is hoped that during this trial we will discover the whereabouts of Jamal’s body. The hearing will reveal the motivations behind the murder. We will try everything in our power to make sure his killers get their just deserts.

A Saudi court has already announced the death penalty for five persons after a murder trial in December 2019. In May 2020, the sons of Jamal Khashoggi decided to pardon his murderers, after which the Saudi government can also pardon all five.

Turkish courts have started an open trial against 20 Saudi citizens named in the killing of Jamal Khashoggi and it will be conducted in their absence.

According to news agencies Turkish prosecutors added 20 Saudi citizens in the list of accused, in March, which includes two previously very close partners of Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman (MBS). According to Arab media a previous Deputy Intelligence Chief of KSA Ahmed Al-Asiri has been accused of planning the murder and formulating the death team while previous media advisor Saud al-Qahtani has been accused of supervising the operation before the killing orders were given. According to Arab media, various suspected include important Saudi officials who participated in the operation while Turkey’s prosecutor has already issued arrest warrants for them.
