Lahore: (Press Release) On World No Tobacco Day, an “Anti-Tobacco Seminar” was held at the Institute of Public Health in collaboration with the Punjab Health Department and Chromatic. Provincial Health Ministers Khawaja Salman Rafique and Khawaja Imran Nazir were special guests at the seminar. Members of the Punjab Assembly Qasim Nadeem and Amina Hassan Sheikh, CEO of Chromatic Shariq Khan, WHO Punjab In-Charge Dr. Jamshed, DG Health Services Dr. Ilyas Gondal, Additional Secretary Babar Awan, Professor Irfan Malik, and many others attended the event.

Addressing the participants, Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir stated that this year’s World No Tobacco Day theme is to protect the younger generation from tobacco use. Different forms of smoking, like e-cigarettes, vaping, and nicotine pouches, are misleading the youth. On World No Tobacco Day, awareness campaigns will be conducted in all hospitals throughout the province. Spending 347 billion rupees on smoking is an injustice to society.

Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said they would recommend to Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, to impose heavy taxes on all forms of smoking. He noted that 7 million people die each year worldwide due to smoking. In Pakistan, wasting 347 billion rupees annually on smoking is extremely regrettable. E-cigarettes and other forms of smoking are also highly harmful to health. The younger generation should focus on their education and positive activities.
