RAWALPINDI, Nov 18 (APP):Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) Monday commemorated World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crashes Victims across the province.

The purpose to mark this day was to remember the road crashes victims – killed or injured – and to pay tribute to the dedicated emergency services especially police and medical professionals who daily deal with such traumatic incidents.

Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) District Emergency Officer Dr Abdur Rahman in a message said 1.3 million people die each year and over 50 million get disabled due to road traffic accidents.

Subsequently, all the district emergency services marked this international day in collaboration with district police and city traffic police, district administrations, Fire and Safety Association of Pakistan, Pakistan Red Crescent, civil society and educational institutions by organizing awareness seminars, candle vigil for remembrance of road crash victims.

According to the statistics, in Rawalpindi, Rescue 1122 alone has managed over 86,165 road traffic crashes in past years.

Dr Abdur Rahman warned that if some concrete steps are not taken at this stage on priority basis then within next few years, every family would have been affected by road traffic accidents as every day only Rescue 1122 in Punjab is dealing with about 700 road traffic emergency calls.

He also emphasized that typical mindset needs to be changed through media, as mostly accidents take place due to negligence of the driver or a fault in the vehicle etc.

He also said the alarming increase in the number of avoidable emergencies particularly road traffic accidents have necessitated Rescue 1122 to speed up the Community Safety Programme where all the stakeholders need to work together for prevention of such emergencies to build a safer Pakistan.
