YAN organized an E-Conference on Socio-Economic Impacts of COVID-19

LAHORE, (Monday, July 13, 2020): To observe the World Population Day, Youth Advocacy Network (YAN) organized an International E-Conference on “Socio-Economic Impacts of COVID-19 on Population”.

This online conference focuses on the urgent and important issues of adolescents and young women being impacted by COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Nausheen Hamid (Parliamentary Secretary, NHSRC), Ms. Alexandra Johns (Executive Director, Asia Pacific Alliance), Dr. Bakhtior Kadirov (Deputy Representative, UNFPA), Ms. Chonghee C. Huwang (Senior Manager Asia, FP 2020), Mr. Elmaddin Mehdiyev (Director General ICYF-ERC) and Mr. Fsahat Ul-Hassan (CEO-YAN) were present for the opening remarks.

Dr. Nausheen Hamid shared that COVID-19 pandemic is certainly going to deepening the existing inequalities in Pakistan however Government of Pakistan is taking urgent and decisive actions to strengthen the healthcare system, providing social protection nets to the most vulnerable population, and recovering economy.

While talking about the drastic impacts of global pandemic on adolescents and young girls, Ms. Alexandra Johns, shared that “COVID-19 has put young girls at greater risk of Child Marriages due to closure of the educational institutions therefore strong social protection services must be provided to all vulnerable populations”.

Dr. Bakhtior Kadirov also highlighted the issue of child marriages due to the restricted provision of SRH services and low CPR rate in Pakistan. Ms. Chonghee C. Huwang remarks were that “We need to proactively address SRHR services, and reach out more women and girls, and engage young people in COVID response.”

Mr. Elmaddin Mehdiyev shared that “Young people play a vital role in COVID-19 response plan. ICYF-ERC adopted a strategy to engage young people and it was well received. We all need to work collectively to overcome this pandemic.”

Lastly, Mr. Fsahat Ul-Hassan thanked all the distinguished panelist for their opening remarks and briefly shared the of global impacts as “The pandemic has drastically impacted the day-to-day life, especially vulnerable population such as young people, women and people with disabilities has been effected the most both mentally and physically”.

The conference was attended by hundreds of young people across the country.
