By Mian Haroon Masood.
Zohran Mamdani, the immigrant, has made his mark by winning the New York mayoral elections last night. They say you can’t stop the avalanche halfway; the tidal wave paved the way for such an unparalleled, triumphant win.
New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world. It may not be so in reality, as time hangs heavy on most who eke out a living. The majority live in a substandard way that takes away from them the basic essentials of a decent life.

Mamdani, born to his coloured parents, a Muslim, has been in New York for some years — studying in the New York public school system and later graduating from Columbia University. Before becoming a member of the New York Assembly, he had been fighting for the New York taxi drivers against predatory heavy loans and made it possible for them to regulate repayments on easier terms.
He has been, and remains, a strong advocate of the Palestinian freedom movement. When asked what he would do if Netanyahu visited New York as mayor, he replied that New York would have him arrested.
Living in an apartment costing 2,300 dollars a month, he is a socialist democrat who wants billionaires to be taxed — so that the money thus collected could be spent on the welfare of the marginalised classes.

President Trump has vociferously made stern remarks about Mamdani, saying that if he won, there would be no funding for New York. Although Mamdani denies being a huge fan of Cuomo, his policies reflect a clear stand for affordability and equity.

Freezing rents to make living affordable, free-fare public travel, and the ambitious plan of building one million houses — these are what Mamdani plans to achieve.
Humanity has, for once, found its way into the echelons of power — the same corridors once occupied by brokers who decided the fate of the underprivileged and marginalised communities at their own whim and will. It seems the tables are now turning in favour of the hapless poor. The pendulum might swing the other way — to the benefit of the rich, the poor, and generally, for everybody.
This is the beginning of a change — a change that may mean more power to the masses, and representation of the public at the presidential level. This is the first drop of a long-awaited rain on a parched, arid, dusty land — the petrichor already being felt across the world.
