India: At least 17 people were killed on Sunday following a powerful blast at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Virudhunagar district, a region known as India’s fireworks hub.

According to initial reports, the explosion occurred at a licensed cracker unit, triggering a massive fire and subsequent blasts. Rescue operations are underway, and officials have warned that the death toll could rise as teams continue searching the debris for trapped workers. Several others are reported injured and have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Fire and rescue services, along with police, rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. Thick smoke and shockwaves were reported from the area, causing panic among local residents. The exact cause of the blast is yet to be determined, but preliminary investigations point to possible mishandling of chemicals or friction during the manufacturing process, common triggers in such incidents in the district.

Virudhunagar and nearby Sivakasi have a long history of firecracker unit accidents due to the high concentration of fireworks industries. Safety norms and licensing by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) are frequently under scrutiny following such tragedies.
