China extends $31m in emergency aid to Afghanistan
Sept 9, 2021: China has announced it is offering at least $31 million in emergency aid, including corona virus vaccines to Afghanistan, as the Taliban has revealed members of its new government.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the announcement Wednesday during a meeting with foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighbors, including Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
Wang said the emergency aid would include food grains, winter supplies, medicine, as well as a dose of 3 million Covid 19 vaccines. In recent days, the Taliban has announced that China will be its “key partner” in rebuilding the war-torn country.
In his remarks Wednesday, Wang quoted Xinhua, China’s news agency as saying that Afghanistan was “standing at a crossroads” as it faces humanitarian crises, including the Covid 19 epidemic. “Some international powers may also use political, economic and financial means to create new problems for Afghanistan,” Xinhua said without elaborating.
China has a land border with Afghanistan, where the Taliban on Tuesday announced a new government that includes officials on a US wanted list. Aside from humanitarian and health efforts, Wang said China could help Afghanistan keep its port gates open and manage refugees and migrants, as well as deepen counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics cooperation.
At the virtual meeting, Wang also said that after the withdrawal of US troops, the United States and its allies are committed to helping Afghanistan. Wang said the common view of the international community is that an end to military intervention by the United States and its allies should be the beginning of the fulfillment of their responsibilities.
He said China was more responsible than any other country in providing economic, livelihood and humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people and on the basis of maintaining Afghanistan’s stability, preventing chaos and respecting Afghanistan’s sovereignty and independence.
China is urging the Taliban to sever ties with all “superpowers” in the country and take action against them. “All parties should strengthen intelligence sharing and border control cooperation to catch and eliminate terrorist groups infiltrating Afghanistan to ensure regional security and stability,” Wang said.
China has previously welcomed the end of “three weeks of anarchy” and said it “attaches great importance” to the formation of a new interim government.
