Coronavirus: Inhuman conduct by Oscar winner Sharmeen’s NGO
LAHORE, 1st April: With the pandemic number surging worldwide and the countries under lockdown, there is a huge need for moral and financial support by the people.
Where some organizations, celebrities, and the people are stepping forward to lend support financially and providing food and daily necessities to the needy there is an NGO that has shown the inhuman behavior towards its employees.
According to reports of Baaghi TV, an organization in Pakistan run by Oscar-winning director, Miss Sharmeen Obaid has shown cruel conduct amidst the crisis, when people all over are trying to help the poor and needy.
Shermeen Obaid Chinoy, whose organization collects funds for the poor from all over the world, has fired its lower-level employees in difficult times. She is one of Pakistan’s leading social workers and an Oscar Award winner.
Sweet Tooth owner raises the bar during pandemic
Shermeen Obaid has been running an international NGO by the name of ‘The Citizens Archive of Pakistan’ for many years and announces millions of dollars annually to the poor in countries such as the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Shermeen has terminated a large number of poor employees from her organization, saying that because of the coronavirus situation, they could not hire so many workers. This move is not only inhumane but also illegal because any worker is given a notification of at least a month in advance of termination of the employment.
According to one of her employees, Raza Gilani, Shermeen Obaid has dismissed 12 of her employees without any notice, and these are the workers whose salary range from 20K and less, working for a 9 hours shift. He has reported on his Twitter account about the incident.
Two days ago, I was fired from the @citizensarchive, along with 12 other employees. We were told that the organisation won’t pay us until the #CoronaInPakistan situation dies down, and that we’ll be ‘welcome to apply again’ after that. This is a violation of our rights.

The dismissed employees are very worried about the situation when at a time they needed the money most, how will they support their families? They are told to just leave without any pay and that they could reapply after the pandemic dies down.
If downsizing was so necessary at this time then why weren’t the directors and the rich people of the organization got fired or their salaries being reduced to take off the pressure?
Coronavirus: Toll risen to 2,039 in Pakistan with 26 reported deaths
According to sources, it has also been learnt that Shermeen Obaid Chinoy’s organization is trying to get millions of dollars in the name of donations for coronavirus affectees in Pakistan from all over the world. If such a noble task is being carried by this NGO, then the inhuman behavior towards poor workers is not justified. They should be rather looked after and their needs fulfilled so that the needy people are not left unattended.
Such type of behavior and that too from a celebrity who is known for her social work on one hand and on the other hand she displays the unjust action is intolerable. A person who is famous for winning Oscars and for making documentaries on women’s rights is not expected of such a partial behavior.
At this time of a calamity, we all must stand united and help our fellow beings as per our limits, the employees of any organization be they rich or poor need equal rights to carry out for their living.
