Air India Ends International Laundry Service as Pakistan Airspace Ban Drives Up Losses

Air India has informed its flight crew that routine laundry services during international layovers will be discontinued from July 1, 2026, citing the need for cost control amid escalating financial pressures. The service will continue for domestic layovers, with exceptions remaining for flight diversions and simulator or training-related duties abroad.

The move is directly linked to the heavy losses triggered by Pakistan’s continued ban on Indian flights using its airspace. The restrictions, imposed in April 2025 following bilateral tensions and repeatedly extended through 2026, have compelled Indian airlines to operate on lengthy detour routes to Europe, North America and other western destinations.

These reroutings have significantly increased fuel consumption and operational costs. Air India has estimated an annual hit of around $600 million from the airspace ban alone, further worsened by surging aviation turbine fuel prices and additional regional airspace challenges.

This laundry service cut forms part of broader austerity measures as the airline grapples with substantial overall losses. Carriers are actively seeking government assistance and alternative flight corridors to reduce the long-term impact of the ongoing restrictions.
