Moscow, April 18 2021:Prominent Kremlin critic, Alexei Navalny, who has been imprisoned in the penal colony town of Pokrov east of Moscow, since February this year for charges of embezzlement, is said to be on the brink of cardiac arrest according to his doctors.

They have urged the authorities for immediate access to Navalny so he can be treated for the back pain and the numbness in his legs and hands. Navalny who is 44, announced on 31st March that he was on hunger strike until he receives proper medical treatment.

Adding to the growing international public outrage against his controversial imprisonment and treatment by the authorities, US President Joe Biden on Saturday, termed Navalny’s treatment as “totally unfair”.

His personal doctor, Anastasia Vasilyeva, along with  three more specialist including cardiologist Yaroslav Ashikhmin have asked prison officials to grant them immediate access to Navalny.

Referring to his patient’s high potassium levels, Ashikhmin wrote on Facebook on Saturday, “Our patient can die any minute. Fatal arrhythmia can develop any minute.”

Navalny, who was poisoned through the nerve agent Novichok last year which he attributes to the Kremlin, is currently suffering from higher potassium levels which according to his doctors may have been exacerbated by the hunger strike. Red flags are raised when a person’s potassium levels are higher than 6 millimoles per litre, in Navalny’s case the reading is 7.1. This may signal impaired renal function and a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia.

According to a tweet she wrote on Saturday, Vasilyeva’s said he had to be examined immediately “taking into account the blood tests and his recent poisoning”.
