Aloka the Peace Dog: From Kolkata Stray to Global Symbol of Compassion

India: Aloka, a rescued Indian pariah dog once wandering the streets of Kolkata, has returned to India after completing a remarkable 2,300-mile barefoot “Walk for Peace” across the United States alongside Buddhist monks.
The tan-and-white dog, whose name means “enlightenment” or “divine light” in Pali and Sanskrit, accompanied Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara and a group of monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The journey, which began on October 26, 2025, took the pilgrims through 10 states to Washington, D.C., where they arrived in February 2026. They walked barefoot to promote mindfulness, compassion, and peace, while advocating for the recognition of Vesak, Buddha’s birthday, as a U.S. federal holiday.
Aloka first joined the monks during a 112-day peace pilgrimage across India in 2022, following them steadfastly despite his stray origins. Adopted into the group, he traveled to the United States and became an unofficial mascot of the American walk, earning thousands of followers on social media and even his own Wikipedia page as “Aloka the Peace Dog.”
During the U.S. trek, Aloka faced health challenges, undergoing surgery for a leg injury in South Carolina. He recovered with care from the monks and support teams, often riding in a vehicle while rejoining the group for rest stops. His resilience further endeared him to admirers across America.
Leaders from Sri Lanka and Thailand provided support for Aloka’s return travel. Upon arriving in Delhi, he and the monks were warmly welcomed by the Maha Bodhi Society. The group now plans further peace walks to key Buddhist sites.
At around four to five years old, Aloka has inspired a charitable foundation in his name dedicated to helping vulnerable animals worldwide. His story highlights themes of loyalty, redemption, and interspecies compassion that transcend borders.
As Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara has noted, Aloka’s journey embodies the very message the monks set out to share: that peace and loving-kindness are accessible to all beings.
