U.S. Secret Service officers exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect on Monday afternoon near the White House, striking and hospitalizing the individual. A juvenile bystander sustained a non-life-threatening graze wound.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. ET on the National Mall near 15th Street and Independence Avenue NW, close to the Washington Monument. Plainclothes agents spotted the suspect, who appeared armed. When approached by officers, the suspect fled on foot, drew a firearm, and fired at law enforcement. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. No Secret Service personnel were injured.

The White House was briefly locked down as a precaution, but officials confirmed no ongoing threat. President Donald Trump continued his scheduled activities uninterrupted. The incident has no apparent connection to recent motorcades or prior events.

The suspect’s identity and motive have not been released. The Secret Service and Metropolitan Police Department are investigating.
