At Least 5 Killed as Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 Overruns Runway at Miami International Airport

An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, striking multiple vehicles, erupting in flames, and killing at least five people, authorities said.

The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operated by 21 Air as Flight 7598, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, around 2 p.m. local time. It left the usable portion of Runway 30 at high speed, crossed the airport perimeter and a nearby road used by warehouse workers and businesses, and came to rest outside the airport boundary near an Amazon facility. The aircraft caught fire, producing heavy smoke, and emergency crews fought the blaze with specialized foam while dealing with a fuel leak.

Miami-Dade officials reported five fatalities and five injuries. Three of the injured were in critical condition and taken to a trauma center; two others were hospitalized with less severe injuries. At least some of the victims were in vehicles struck by the plane. The pilot and co-pilot were initially trapped inside the aircraft.

More than 60 fire-rescue units responded. All runways and taxiways were closed for several hours during the busy Labor Day weekend travel period, leading to significant delays and cancellations. Two runways later reopened. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause; thunderstorms and wind gusts were present in the area at the time, but it remains unclear whether weather was a factor.

The 32-year-old Boeing 767 had previously served as a passenger aircraft before conversion to cargo configuration. Amazon said it is cooperating with authorities and supporting those affected.
