Abu Dhabi, 19th August: For the beauty conscious, cosmetic consumer of today, the understanding of how lifestyle impacts the condition of the skin is imperative.

It is helpful to learn the basics of skincare including how to analyze skin conditions, how to identify skin types, and how to apply appropriate treatments and potions. It is fair to say that knowing the chemistry of skincare and being able to select and use appropriate products plays a significant part in one’s journey towards the ideal skin condition

The first step towards regaining your child-like skin is to make sure that you are eating the right food, drinking plenty of water, exercising, taking enough sleep, and lastly protecting your skin from potentially harmful interactions with sunlight, dust, or even pollen.

The health of your skin begins with good nutrition. Living cells continually replace the dead cells on the surface of the skin and this process is highly dependent on the availability of vitamins, minerals, and good old hydration.

The relationship between the skin and body is symbiotic, mutually reliant, and interdependent. It’s important to realize that the foundation for healthy, radiant skin starts on the inside. All of the cells require good nutrition, proper hydration, oxygenation, and detoxification to thrive.

A routine shouldn’t be a cliché, maintaining good habits every day is the most impactful lifestyle strategy. If one skip washing the face after sweaty sports or a long day of wearing makeup, the pores can clog and cause pimples.

Let’s remind ourselves of the high school biology; the skin consists of three layers with each layer posing its own characteristics.

First is the deep layer called hypodermis that contains a layer of fat, blood vessels, and nerves, then comes to the middle layer called dermis that responds to the aging process.

The dermis is composed of collagen and elastin which are proteins that give the skin structure and flexibility. The surface layer is called the epidermis which gives immediate visual clues to the condition and health of the skin.

Although it shares the same layered structure, everyone’s skin is different—in tone, texture, and features.
Its needs and strengths change over the course of a lifetime, and caring for it can create a healthy underpinning for other routines as well—like hair care or makeup.

In today’s day and age, it’s important to keep up with the rapid changes in the known science of lifestyle and nutrition. The research and improvements of a wide variety of products make cosmetic choices a moving target and it’s imperative to be aware and informed of new and upcoming formulas as much as it is important to know your own skin.

The understanding of a particular product and its ingredients makes it easy to target your skin type. As a certified skincare professional and an avid consumer of beauty products, my personal thoughts on beauty stem with the idea of exploring the marriage between the biology and chemistry of skin and skincare products respectively.

With an educated use of ingredients like acids, Vitamin, Antioxidant, Retinoids, SPFs & Peptides, and layering in the right order one may provide exhilarating benefits to the skin. We must never stop figuring out the best and the most suitable choice of usable products.

Aside from the order of application, some experts believe it’s also important to consider the time it takes for your skin to absorb the skincare products.

Here are a few tips that may assist the cause:

• General rule of thumb that is water-based should not be combined with oil-based products.
• Water-based products should be applied before oil-based/creams/suspensions.
• If the number of water-based products is more than one, the priority of skincare concerns should dictate the application hierarchy. The product that targets your primary concerns should be applied first.
• Remember to double cleanse your face with lukewarm water to clean impurities.
• Use toners as studies say that it helps to shrink the pores and helps to maintain the PH of the skin.
• Serums are super-concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments that address specific concerns, so it’s better to keep them as close to the skin as possible. They are used as potent enhancements to many regimens.
• Apply eye cream at least every night—if not twice a day.
• Spot treatments may be used as per the severity of the visual acne/dark spot.
• Everyone needs a moisturizer, even the oily skins. Although the human body has its own natural lubricating system governed by the glands, most of still need extra hydration and some extra care.
• Wearing sunscreen every day is just about the best thing you can do for your skin. Not only does it help to decrease your risk of developing skin cancer it also prevents premature aging of the skin. People who use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily show 24 percent less skin aging than those who do not.

Remember that beauty lies skin deep and this includes all the three layers of the skin…

Feel confident in your skin and stay beautiful.
