Birmingham Airport Runway Closed Amid Storm Goretti Chaos

Birmingham Airport (BHX) has suspended all runway operations due to heavy snowfall from Storm Goretti, plunging hundreds of passengers into travel turmoil overnight.

The decision was announced late Thursday evening as intense wintry conditions blanketed the West Midlands, with the airport citing safety concerns for passengers and staff as the primary reason.

In a statement posted on social media, the airport said: “Due to heavy snow, runway operations are currently suspended. Passengers due to travel should contact their airline regarding the status of flights.”

Flights have been cancelled or diverted to alternative airports including Heathrow, Manchester, and East Midlands. Early reports indicate chaos in the terminal, with stranded travellers describing poor communication and long waits.

Storm Goretti, dubbed a “weather bomb” by forecasters, has brought gusts up to 99mph, amber warnings for snow across the Midlands and Wales, and widespread disruptions including road closures and power outages.

The Met Office warns of up to 30cm of snow in higher areas, with travel chaos expected to continue into Friday. Hundreds of schools have already announced closures.

Airport officials are monitoring conditions closely, but no reopening time has been confirmed. Passengers are urged to check with airlines for updates and avoid travelling to the airport unless necessary.

This is the most significant weather-related shutdown at a major UK airport in recent years, highlighting the impact of extreme winter storms amid ongoing climate concerns.
