BRICS Foreign Ministers Convene in New Delhi Amid Global Tensions

Imdia: Foreign ministers from BRICS nations began a two-day meeting in the Indian capital today, focusing on strengthening multilateral cooperation, global governance reforms, and addressing pressing international challenges.

Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is chairing the meeting at Bharat Mandapam under India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship. This gathering serves as a key preparatory event ahead of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit later this year.

Delegations from all BRICS member countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE, along with partner nations are participating. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi are among the high-profile attendees. The ministers are also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The discussions are centered on the theme “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Key agenda items include reforms of global governance and the multilateral system, economic resilience, energy and food security, climate change, technology collaboration, counter-terrorism, and regional developments.

In his opening remarks, Jaishankar underscored the current period of “major global flux,” marked by conflicts, economic uncertainties, trade disruptions, and climate challenges, while calling for practical cooperation among member states.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in West Asia and broader questions about BRICS’ role in an evolving multipolar world. Sessions will continue on May 15, with expectations of outcomes focused on concrete deliverables in development and inclusive global governance.
